Cadott girls make history in first State appearance

By Ginna Young

The Cadott girls wrestling team has made history by just being in existence, but it wasn’t enough for them to stop at that. Four grapplers will wrestle at State this year, after earning the right to do so at the Edgar Sectional Feb. 18.

“Very excited for the girls to see what they do at Madison,” said coach Caitlyn Kaz.

Claiming the Sectional crown in her weight class, was freshman Iszy Sonnentag (100 pounds), who received a bye in each of the three rounds prior to the championship bout. She then took on Bruce’s Shelby Garcia, winning the match in a 3:35 fall.

Also heading to State, are sophomore Maria Cuahua (132), and juniors Shannon Burlum (138) and Alaina Kempen (145), who all received byes.

“This is a major accomplishment for the girls and I’m hoping this will make more Cadott females be excited to try the sport next season,” said Kaz.
