Chiefs win out-of-league, outgunned by the Trojans

Cornell split the week’s games for the girls basketball program, winning one out-of-conference, while dropping one to second place New Auburn.

Jan. 31 vs. Lac Courte Oreilles conference (W 60-36)

It was off to LCO to begin the week, coming out strong right off the bat and never looking back.

“They took care of the ball and truly worked together as a team on both ends of the court,” said coach Courtney Yanko.

With those team efforts, the Chiefs brought home the non-conference win, 60-36. “The girls continue to work extremely hard,” said Yanko. “They are still showing improvement with each game.”

Junior Grace Harycki led for Cornell, with 15 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and a steal, followed by sophomore Bralee Schroeder, with 12 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals. Junior Lauren Samardzich was right behind, with 11 points, 4 rebounds and a block, followed by senior Kelsea Popp, with 10 points, 5 rebounds and a steal.

Junior Makya Hetherington added 8 points on the night, along with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Sophomore Alyssa Bowe also got on the board, with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal, and junior Teryn Close helped out with 2 points, a rebound and an assist.

Nabbing rebounds for the Chiefs, were junior Marcella Boehm, with 2, and freshman Addyson DeJongh, with 1.

“I am extremely proud of what we have accomplished this season, and look forward to the few weeks we have left,” said Yanko.

Feb. 3 vs. New Auburn conference (L 51-33)

To end the week, Cornell went back into conference play for a match-up with the second ranked New Auburn. The game was fairly evenly matched in the first half, with the Chiefs only down by five at the break.

By the second half, the Trojans stepped up their scoring and eventually took the game, 51-33. The loss drops Cornell to 8-12 overall and to 5-7 in the East Lakeland Conference.

Samardzich led for the Chiefs in the game, with 12 points, followed by Hetherington, with 8, and Popp, who added 7. Schroeder chipped in with 3 points on the night, while Close had 2 and Bowe made a free throw.
