By Ginna Young

In a three-game home streak, the Cadott girls basketball program saw some ups and downs against their opponents, but celebrated an individual accomplishment as a family.

Jan. 24 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (L 82-74)

First up on the week, was Osseo-Fairchild, who came in very determined to take home a win. Scoring was evenly matched in the first half, with the Hornets taking a slim three-point lead into halftime.

By the second half, the Thunder had found their offense and outscored Cadott, leading to an 82-74 victory for the visiting team.

“It was a tough game, we got into high scoring shootout with them and just came up a little short,” said coach Dave Hazuga.

Leading for the Hornets, was senior Lauryn Goettl, who racked up an impressive 34 points on the night, as well as notching her 1,000th career point. Senior Elly Eiler and junior Emma Kowalczyk each recorded 14 points, followed by senior Laken Ryan, with 6, and senior Eva Enestvedt, with 5, while junior Bradee Burish added a free throw.

“Lauryn hitting the 1,000 point mark was a major accomplishment,” said Hazuga. “Great for the program and really well-deserved for Lauryn.”

Jan. 27 vs. Thorp conference (W 79-56)

A few days later, Cadott went up against Thorp, who gave all they had to the Hornets.

“We were celebrating senior night and we got off to a slow start on the court, but came out after halftime with a little more energy,” said Hazuga.

With only a six-point lead to start the second half, Cadott quickly outmatched the Cardinals, to reel in a 79-56 win.

Eiler and Goettl each came up big on the night, scoring 26 and 22 points, respectively, while Ryan ended with 16 points, 12 of those from three-pointers. Kowalczyk had 9 points for the Hornets and freshman Dani Sikora added 5.

“We played well offensively, it was a good scoring night,” said Hazuga. “We have to keep focusing on our defense.”

Jan. 30 vs. Prairie Farm non-conference (L 55-41)

Rounding out the three-game home stand, Prairie Farm came to call, as the Hornets stepped out of the conference for a match with the ever tough Panthers.

The first half of the game was fairly evenly matched, with the Hornets down four at halftime. By the second half, the Panthers opened up their scoring and Cadott was unable to catch up, watching the game go to Prairie Farm, 55-41.

The Hornets now sit at 15-4 overall and 8-2 in West Cloverbelt Conference action.
