Wolfpack sends one on to finals at St. Croix Falls

By Ginna Young

Only the top eight athletes place at the St. Croix Falls Invitational, which meant the Cornell Wolfpack Wrestlers would need to give it their all Jan. 21.

“The SCF tournament was a battle,” said coach Greg Sonnentag. “This is one of two elimination tournaments we wrestle in.”

Freshman Anthony Schofield (220 pounds) received a bye in the first round for the Wolfpack, but fell to Northwestern’s Devon Walker, in the second, with a 2:59 fall. Meanwhile, sophomore Preston Fredrickson (132) was defeated by Cumberland’s Logan Peterson, by a 19-2 technical foul.

“Preston and Anthony caught some tough match-ups, and were unable to make the top eight,” said Sonnentag.

Senior Braeden Person (152) battled his way back in the bracket, to face off with Alexander Campbell, Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Prairie Farm, for a 3-1 decision.

“Braeden Person took a loss early that we thought we should have won,” said Sonnentag. “However, he came back with a solid victory and was able to avenge the loss in the seventh place match.”

Junior Troy Duellman (145) carried off the top honors of the day, earning a second place finish.

“He lost a tight one that was 1-1 in the third period,” said Sonnentag. “Troy gave up a takedown with less than a minute left, to fall behind 3-1. He is only the third wrestler I have coached to make the finals of this tournament.”

Duellman ended his day against Griffin Marko, of St. Croix Falls, dropping the bout for the 3-1 decision.

“We took a lot away from this tournament,” said Sonnentag. “We have some key areas we need to improve on before the tournament series, which is quickly approaching.”
