Cadott remains unbeaten to stay in title contention

By Ginna Young

Cadott’s boys wrestling program is still going strong, after two competitions over the week.

Jan. 12 Stanley-Boyd Triangular

It was off to Stanley-Boyd for a triangular against the host team and Regis-Altoona (RAW). Cadott made quick work in both the matches, bringing home wins over their opponents.

Taking a 55-24 victory over Stanley-Boyd, Cadott saw wins from senior Brayden Sonnentag (132 pounds), in an 11-3 major decision over Breckin Burzynski; as well as from senior Nick Fasbender (145), over Landen Hoel, with a 7-1 decision; and senior Tristan Drier (152), who took his match from Aaron Sturm, in a 3:53 fall.

Also picking up wins, were senior Cole Pfeiffer (160), over John Burgoyne-Mellor, by fall, in 2:30; junior Caden Kingston (170), over Dylan Seichter, with a 3:19 fall; senior Levi Lindsay (195), over Caden Koepl, by fall, in 1:24; and senior Kane Mengel (285), over Damian Seichter, in a 0:59 fall.

Coming away with wins by forfeit, were sophomore Kaleb Lodahl (106), junior Lukas Simenson (113) and freshman Mitchell Reinke (182).

“The Hornets stay unbeaten in Conference duals and in contention to win our fourth straight conference title,” said coach Josh Spaeth.

Cadott also brought home the victory over RAW, 51-21.

Lodahl got the win over Cillian O’Connell, by fall, in 1:24, while Simenson won over Dylan Saeger, in an 11-5 decision, and junior Nick Goettl (126) earned a victory over Brayden Kunze, in a 3:18 fall.

Sonnentag won again, with a 0:32 fall over Ethan Eager, follwed by Fasbender, who won over Aiden Frase, in a 1:07 fall. Drier also picked a win, over Tommy Tomesh, by fall, in 0:57, as did Pfeiffer, with a mere 0:11 second match victory over Mason Tomesh.

Reinke also picked up another win, over Jackson Berg, in a 2:13 fall, followed by Kane, who won over Gavin Lofgren, with a 1:14 fall.

“I saw a lot of fight from our wrestlers,” said Spaeth. “We did not give up many pins when we were out-matched. This is what wins duals.”

Jan. 14 Ladysmith Invitational

It was then off to Ladysmith, to face off against 21 other teams.

“We were wrestling a few weights short and still placed in the top two teams,” said Spaeth.

The Hornets crowned five champions on the day, adding to their boost going into the second half of the season – Sonnentag, over Mineral Point’s Kade Rule, with a 12-3 major decision; Drier, over Braeden Person, Cornell-Gilman, in a 4:39 fall; Pfeiffer, over Osceloa’s Addison Uddin, by fall, in 3:17; senior Dawson Webster (182), over Aiden Drost, of Rice Lake, in a 3:12 fall; and Lindsay, over Logan Poradish (Ladysmith), in a 2:49 fall, who won his first invitational tournament.

“Levi started wrestling at a later age and has put in a tremendous amount of time to become better,” said Spaeth. “He is currently recognized as one of the best 195-pound wrestlers in the state.”

Seeing success for Cadott, Fasbender competed in the championship match, but fell just short, taking second, against Mineral Point’s Lucas Sullivan, in a 2:42 fall, while junior Axel Tegels (220) came in third, wrestling against Ladysmith’s Jack Lazar.

“I feel all of our wrestlers wrestled to the best of their ability and are always looking for the next best thing,” said Spaeth. “This was a great tournament, where all of our athletes were able to complete.”
