Lake Holcombe claims victory over Flambeau

By Ginna Young

Going in, Lake Holcombe knew the battle with Flambeau Dec. 13, would be a hard one, as the Falcons are a good team and well-coached. But the Chieftains girls basketball team wouldn’t give up the game without a fight.

The game was tied 19-19 at halftime, but added just enough points in the second half, to take a 43-38 victory. Defense and free-throws helped get the Chieftains over the line, for the conference win.

“Our athletes were highly motivated and we’re very proud their effort,” said assistant coach J.D. Kirkman.

Junior Emma Lechleitner continued her hot shooting, racking up 22 points, including a three-point shot. Senior Karly Kirkman followed that up with a three-pointer of her own, ending with 15 points. Sophomore Abby Jones also hit a three, recording 5 points, while senior Justine Kane shot a free throw for 1 point.

“We continue to improve every game and we know we have areas we can improve,” said J.D. Kirkman. “The team is really starting to develop their own rhythm and it makes our experience as coaches very enjoyable.”
