Cornell fails to declaw powerful Bears squad

By Ginna Young

It was off to Clayton for the Cornell girls basketball team Dec. 13, in a conference bout on the road. It was a battle to the end, but the Bears are a tough team at the top of the conference and refused to go down.

The game went to the home team, 57-42, and the Chiefs went home with their first league loss of the season.

“We knew it would be tough and we look forward to facing them later in the season at home,” said coach Courtney Yanko. “The girls fought hard.”

Senior Kelsea Popp continues to lead by example for the younger teammates, ending her night with 18 points, 2 rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Bralee Schroeder came next, with 14 points, 3 rebounds and an assist, followed by junior Makya Hetherington, with 5 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

Sophomore Alyssa Bowe added 5 points, 1 rebound and 2 assists, while juniors Lauren Samardzich and Marcella Boehm each came away with a rebound.

“The game did not go how we hoped it would go, but we saw growth in our team yet again,” said Yanko.
