The Lake Holcombe boys basketball program opened its conference season against Winter Dec. 9, picking up the first win of the year, as well.

In the hard-fought battle, the Chieftains held a sizable lead at one point, but the Warriors clawed their way back to throw a scare into Lake Holcombe. The Chieftains refused to bow down and held on to take the 79-72 win.

Senior Harley Schroeder had a double-double on the night, with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Brian Strzok also had a double-double, with an impressive 18 rebounds and 11 points. Meanwhile, junior Taye Yeager had 17 points and sophomore Ryley Craker also had double figures, with 16 points.

Sophomore Chase Burgess added 8 points and 9 rebounds for the Chieftains, while junior Trent Nitek finished with 3 points and sophomore Trent Lee chipped in a big bucket when needed near the end of the game.

Defensively, Schroeder and Strzok combined for 11 assists, and Schroeder and Craker combined for 7 steals.

“It was a solid team effort by all,” said coach Joy Webster.
