In a non-conference match, the neighboring towns of Cadott and Cornell met for a girls basketball showdown Dec. 5, on Cadott’s home court.

The Hornets jumped to an early lead and never looked back, adding 52 points to the scoreboard in the first half, while holding Cornell to just 15 points.

“The girls fought hard,” said Cornell coach Courtney Yanko. “We knew this game was going to be tough, but we used it as a way to get better. We saw a lot of positives, offensively and defensively.” The second half didn’t see as much scoring on Cadott’s side, but the Chiefs couldn’t muster their offense and the game went to Cadott, 77-27.

“Cornell got off to a good start and broke our defense a few times,” said Cadott coach Dave Hazyuga. “We got it together and went on a few good runs. We just have to keep working on our improving areas, but the girls played well.”

Leading for Cadott, was senior Lauryn Goettl, who finished with 24 points, followed by senior Elly Eiler, with 16, and junior Emma Kowalczyk, who had 12. Senior Laken Ryan came next, with 10 points, and junior Bradee Burish, sophomore Kasey Moldrem and freshman Taylor Hager, all added 5.

Ryan and Kowalczyk each made a pair of shots from longrange, while Goettl, Eiler, Burish, Moldrem and Hager all connected on a three-pointer.

For Cornell, senior Kelsea Popp ended the night with 9 points and 2 rebounds, with junior Grace Harycki behind her with 5 points and 2 rebounds. Sophomore Bralee Schroeder came away with 4 points and 4 rebounds, as did junior Makya Hetherington, and junior Lauren Samardzich hit a three, along with Harycki.

Junior Marcella Boehm finished up with 2 and 2 rebounds, while sophomore Alyssa Bowe brought in 2 rebounds and junior Teryn Close had 1.

“With a four-game week this week, we are moving onto conference play and we are very excited for that,” said Yanko. “There are a lot of great things to come out of our team yet this season.”

Cadott’s record now sits at 5-0 on the season, while Cornell is 1-4.
