Cadott falls in second round of WIAA playoffs

Cadott’s volleyball program rushed through the first Regional at home, to take on Marathon in the second round.
Oct. 18 vs. Augusta Regional (W 3-0)
Hosting the first round of WIAA playoffs against No. 12 Augusta, Cadott was seeded fifth in their bracket.
The match started out in favor of the Hornets, who took a quick 25-14 win. Augusta rallied the troops to make the second set a lot closer, but Cadott pulled off the win, 25-23. The Beavers tried one last time to best Cadott, but it wasn’t to be, as the Hornets reeled in a 25-20 victory, advancing to the next level of playoffs.
Leading on the night, was senior Lauryn Goettl, with 8 kills, 5 aces and 13 assists, while senior Elly Eiler ended with 9 kills and 6 assists. Senior Laken Ryan notched 7 aces and 12 digs in the home win.
Oct. 20 vs. Marathon Regional (L 3-2)
Two days later, the Hornets traveled to No. 4 Marathon, for a battle to reach Sectional competition.
The Hornets fell behind early on, dropping the first sets, 25-23 and 25-22. Cadott wouldn’t go down without a fight, and took the third and fourth sets, 25-13 and 25-18. It was nail-biter, but in the end, Cadott watched the fifth and final set go to the home team, 15-12, ending the Hornets’ season.
“We went down 2-0 and when they could’ve given up, they never did and battled back to even it up,” said coach Lynn Schreiner.
Goettl recorded 26 kills, 21 assists and 17 digs in the match, followed by Eiler, with 17 kills, 15 assists and 12 digs. Ryan came away with 25 digs and 2 aces, and junior Emma Kowalczyk added 8 kills and 16 digs.
“The girls played with all heart tonight,” said Schreiner. “I am so proud of how they came out and never quit.”
