Cornell notches a third straight conference title

It’s been a banner year for the Cornell volleyball program, as they claimed the East Lakeland Conference championship crown.
Oct. 11 vs. Winter conference (W 3-1)
Making the trek to Winter was well worth it for the Chiefs, as that would be where they secured the third straight league title.
Although the Warriors proved somewhat of a challenge in the first sets, Cornell pulled out the wins, 25-21 and 35-33. Winter bounced back to take the third set, 25-16, but Cornell wouldn’t be denied in the fourth set and took home a 25-16 win, clinching the conference crown.
“The Winter Warriors gave us our first conference set loss this season,” said coach Amy Lorenzen.
Sophomore Bralee Schroeder “served tough” with 14 serves, 7 aces and only 1 error. She also had 5 kills and 8 assists. Junior Brooke Anderson led the team in kills, with 7 and had 11 digs, while junior Makya Hetherington had 6 kills and 20 assists, and junior Brooke Sime had 6 kills and 13 digs.
Oct. 13 vs. Flambeau conference (W 3-0)
Two nights later, a Homecoming game against Flambeau finished out the regular season. The first set was close, but Cornell took that, 25-22, as well as the second set, 25-13.
The Falcons gave a renewed effort in the third and final set, but the Chiefs refused to bow down, and brought in a 25-23 win.
Senior Michayla Turchen had 7 kills and 8 digs on the night, with Anderson recording 5 kills. Sime had 4 kills, 6 aces and 8 digs, while junior Marcella Boehm ended with 3 kills.
Schroeder added 7 assists and 6 digs, while Hetherington chipped in with 14 assists, 1 ace and 7 digs.
The Chiefs finished with a league record of 12-0 and a set record of 36-1. As a No. 5 seed, they will now host No. 12 Siren Oct. 18.
