Cadott ends conference action on a high note

By Ginna Young

Cadott’s volleyball program is picking up momentum as the season nears its end, just in time for the post-season match-ups.

Oct. 4 vs. McDonell conference (L 3-2)

McDonell came to call on Cadott, to open the week, in a lock-down, drag-out fight to the end.

In the first set, the Hornets narrowly came away with the victory, 25-21, but rebounded for a 25-19 win in the second set. However, the Macks weren’t to be outdone and took the next two sets, 25-17. It was all or nothing for the Macks, who buckled down for the fifth and final set, and came up with the victory, 15-12.

Leading on the night, was senior Lauryn Goettl, with 15 kills, 18 assists, 6 aces and 17 digs, followed by senior Elly Eiler, who had 12 kills, 9 assists and 12 digs. Senior Laken Ryan notched 32 digs and 1 ace.

“We really battled last night,” said coach Lynn Schreiner. “Even though the outcome didn’t turn out our way, I saw a lot of good things to build on, moving toward playoffs.”

Oct. 6 vs. Regis conference (W 3-1)

Two days later, the Hornets were on the road to Regis. The Ramblers came to play in the match, but so did the Hornets. The first set was again a close affair, but Cadott was determined and won, 25-22. The second set was easier, in favor of Cadott, 25-18, but the third set was a battle to the end, with the Hornets taking it, 32-30.

After that, the fourth set went to Cadott with no contest, 25-18.

Goettl again led on kills, with 18, notching 23 assists and 4 aces. Eiler finished with 12 kills, 9 assists and 24 digs, while junior Emma Kowalczyk had 9 kills, 2 aces and 16 digs, and Ryan added 2 aces and 17 digs.

“It was a great feeling to end conference the way we did,” said Schreiner. “The girls rallied from a set down and played with a lot of heart to finish the match out.”

Oct. 8 vs. Unity non-conference (W 3-0)

There was no rest for the Hornets, as over the weekend, they traveled to Altoona, for a tournament. First up on the day, was Unity.

The Hornets won the first set, 25-23, but that would be it in the match, as Unity took the remaining sets, 25-19 and 15-11.

Oct. 8 vs. E.C. North non-conference (L 2-0)

Up next, was E.C. North, who took both sets from Cadott, 25-17 and 25-15.

Oct. 8 vs. Osceola non-conference (W 2-1)

Cadott faced Osceola next and came out hot, taking the first set, 25-9. The second set went to Osceola, 25-18, but Cadott refused to go down and brought in the win in the third set, 15-8.

Oct. 8 vs. McDonell conference (L 2-0)

Their final opponent of the day was McDonell, who the Hornets faced earlier in the week. Unfortunately, Cadott couldn’t come up with the win and the Macks took the sets, 25-16 and 25-18.

Goettl ended the day with 32 kills, 6 aces, 31 assists and 32 digs, followed by Eiler, with 22 kills, 16 assists and 21 digs. Kowalczyk had 11 kills to her credit, with 26 digs, while junior Makenna Harel had 24 digs and 3 aces.
