It was all winning ways for Cornell’s volleyball program, which maintained their undefeated streak in the East Lakeland Conference.

Sept. 22 vs. Bruce conference (W 3-0)

Bruce came to call on the Chiefs for a conference matchup, but it was no contest for the rolling Cornell squad. The sets went to Cornell, 25-13, 25-8 and 25-6.

Junior Brooke Sime recorded 9 aces and 3 kills, followed by junior Brooke Anderson and sophomore Briana Glaus, with 4 kills. Sophomore Bralee Schroeder pitched in with 8 assists and 6 aces.

Sept. 24 vs. Frederic non-conference (W 2-0)

The Chiefs then headed to Winter, for a weekend tournament, where they received a first-round bye. Cornell then

faced Frederic, taking both sets, 25-19.

Sept. 24 vs. South Shore non-conference (W 2-0)

Up next was South Shore. “At this point of the tournament, Cornell and South Shore were the only two teams that did not have a loss,” said coach Amy Lorenzen. “The winner of this match was headed to the championship.”

Cornell insured they would be one of the teams who were in the championship bout, making quick work of South Shore, 25-23 and 25-20.

Sime had 10 kills in the match, with 13 digs and 3 aces, while Anderson ended with 8 kills and 20 digs. Junior Makya Hetherington notched 28 assists and senior Michayla Turchen had 6 kills. Rounding out the scoring, Schroeder had 7 kills, 12 assists and 9 digs.

Sept. 24 vs. Frederic non-conference (W 2-0)

“Frederic won their way back from the loser’s bracket to face us again in the championship match,” said Lorenzen.

Despite a close first set win, 25-20, Cornell hung on to take the next set, 25-17, and the first place trophy in the tournament.

Anderson and Sime both had 5 kills, while Turchen added 6 kills. Schroeder ended with 5 kills and 7 assists, and Hetherington had 14 assists.
