Hornets top Knights in Regional showdown

As the No. 3 seed in the Division 4 bracket of the WIAA softball tournament, Cadott hosted the first round of Regionals May 24, going up against No. 6 seed Cornell-Lake Holcombe.
Cadott got on the board first in the match-up, bringing in two runs, while the Knights remained scoreless in the first inning.
However, in the second inning, the Knights were the ones to score two runs to tie up the game.
“We started out a little slow, but then we picked up momentum in the third and fourth innings,” said Cadott coach Kari Moldrem.
The Hornets added two more runs in the third inning, then knocked in seven in the fourth.
“Makenna (Barone) started really controlling her pitches,” said Moldrem. “Lauryn’s (Goettl) home run was a good spark, offensively, in the fourth inning, when the team rallied to score seven runs.”
In an attempt to even up the score, the Knights brought two runs over the plate in the fifth inning, but Cadott came up with three more in their side of the inning, to take the 14-4 victory. With the win, Cadott moved on to the second round of Regional action, while Cornell-Lake Holcombe’s season came to an end.
“We played well through the first three innings,” said Knights’ coach Andy Lorenzen. “A couple physical mistakes snowballed on us and Cadott’s bats got hot.”
The senior Barone pitched all five innings for the Hornets, giving up 10 hits and 4 runs, and striking out 7.
On the offensive side of things for Cadott, the juniors Goettl, Elly Eiler and Laken Ryan, all had 3 hits in the game, as did freshman Rilei Weeks. Seniors Olivia Goodman and Barone, junior Morgan Moldrem and freshman Kasey Moldrem all had a hit for the Hornets.
For the Knights, sophomore Brooke Anderson went 4.33 innings for her team, allowing 16 hits, 14 runs and a walk, while striking out 2 batters.
Junior Michayla Turchen notched 3 hits for the Knights, offensively, followed by sophomores Makya Hetherington and Grace Harycki, who each had 2 hits. Senior Teaira Spaeth, junior Rachael Schilling and freshman Izabelle Schwingle all had a hit.
“We have a core group of talented younger players and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them in all sports,” said Lorenzen.
