Hornets take out Ramblers, fall to Crickets, Bluejays

By Ginna Young

It was a long week for the Cadott softball program, as they competed in four games, three of those in conference action.

May 10 vs. Regis conference (W 12-3)

Beginning a four-game stretch, the Hornets headed to Regis, for a conference showdown, with offense on the side of Cadott.

“As a team overall, we played really well, both offensively and defensively,” said coach Kari Moldrem.

The Hornets went ahead early on, with a four-run lead in the first inning, before adding two more in the third and four in the fourth, while holding Regis to just one run during that time. Regis would add two runs to their score in the fifth inning, but Cadott went on to bring in two more runs across the plate and take a 12-3 win.

“It was a night to get players some experience that hadn’t had a chance yet,” said Moldrem. “That way, if they are called upon again during playoffs, hopefully, they can take a deep breath and not let their nerves get to them.”

Senior Makenna Barone went four innings, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 4, while freshman Kasey Moldrem pitched three innings, giving up a hit and striking out 5 batters.

Barone, juniors Elly Eiler and Lauryn Goettl, Kasey Moldrem, and freshmen Rilei Weeks and Brooklyn Hrdlicka, each had 2 hits for Cadott, and junior Morgan Moldrem had 1 hit.

May 12 vs. Regis conference (W 12-1)

The Hornets faced Regis yet again, two days later, with the scoreboard much the same, in favor of Cadott. The Hornets got on the board in the first inning with a run, then knocked in 11 runs in the second. Regis came up with a run in the fifth inning, but couldn’t add any more and Cadott took the game, 12-1.

“Laken Ryan had a big night, with two doubles and Eva Enestvedt hit her second home run of the season,” said Kari Moldrem. “Lauryn Goettl shut out innings and quickly worked getting Regis batters out, which gave Kasey Moldrem the opportunity to gain more experience on the mound as a freshman.”

Goettl went two innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 2, and Kasey Moldrem pitched for three innings, striking out 3 and only allowing 3 hits.

The junior Ryan led Cadott with 2 hits, while senior Olivia

Senior Sam Gindt putts one in for his Cadott team May 7, going up against multiple athletes in a home invitational.

Goodman, Barone, Eiler, the junior Enestvedt and M. Moldrem all had 1 hit.

May 13 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 16-6)

The next night, the Hornets were off the short distance to Fall Creek, but their offense wasn’t as strong as the last two games. Cadott was held scoreless until the third inning, when they brought in three runs, but the Crickets already had eight runs on the board and added another three runs in the third and four in the fourth inning.

The Hornets tried to rally in the fifth inning, knocking in three runs, but Fall Creek had too big a lead and walked away the victors, 16-6.

Goettl went on the mound for 1.67 innings, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks, while Kasey Moldrem pitched 2.33 innings, giving up 5 hits and 5 walks, and striking out 2.

Weeks and Goettl came up with 2 hits on offense, and Eiler, Enestvedt, M. Moldrem and Kasey Moldrem each added a hit.

May 16 vs. Athens non-conference (L 9-5)

To finish out the week, the Hornets hit the road to Athens, for a non-conference match. It was slow going for the offense, as Cadott was shut out until the sixth inning, when they knocked in four runs.

However, Athens already had seven on the board and the Hornets tried to tie the game, but fell just short, watching the game go to Athens, 9-5.

Goettl took the mound for all six innings for Cadott, giving up 8 hits and 3 walks.

On the offensive side, Eiler and M. Moldrem had 2 hits each. Goodman, Goettl, Enestvedt and Ryan each came away with 1 hit.
