Hornets running to the finish for season’s end

By Ginna Young

The Cadott runners took on some tough competition over the week, taking part in two track events.

May 10 Colfax Invitational

As part of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship meet, the Hornets saw a large field of competitors.

For the boys, senior Gavin Tegels came in second in the shot put event, with a throw of 44-11.5, followed by senior Cameron Messenger, who placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.51) and senior Kaleb Sonnentag, who also was fourth, coming in with a time of 44.19 in the 300-meter hurdles.

On the girls side of things, junior Lucy Lindeman earned fourth place in the discus throw (97-02), while sophomore Jaycee Stephens was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.53), with freshman Emma Kowalczyk right behind, for fifth (17.68).

Kowalczyk also came in seventh in the 300 hurdles (53.56).

May 13 Home Invitational

It was then time to host the DeJung Invitational.

“It was a great night for a meet,” said coach Pat Rothbauer. “It was an unrestricted entry meet, so everyone got into the meet. This is great, because every meet from here on out, will be restricted, so it will be difficult to get everyone into the meets.”

During the home events, the girls 4x800meter relay team of freshmen Mia Weggen, Lyla Weggen, Cortney Weggen and Mckenna Steinke, took third place (11:43.89), while the boys relay of juniors Jacob Rowe and Ty Rowe, sophomore Sage Handrick and freshman Ethan Kerschner, came in fifth in that event (10:19.9).

Individually, Messenger placed third in the 110 hurdles (17.77) for the boys, with sophomore Wyatt Engel 10th in that event (20.87).

For the girls, Kowalczyk was second in the 100 hurdles (18.13), with Stephens just a step behind for third (18.25). Kowalczyk also placed high in the 300 hurdles, coming in fourth (53.70), while Stephens was again right behind for fifth place (53.71).

Senior Mallory Kyes placed 10th in the 100-meter dash (14.35) and sophomore Kendall Webster was 10th place in the 1,600-meter run (7:06.83).

“The next couple of weeks will be very exciting, as we head into the tournament series,” said Rothbauer.
