Knights lose heartbreaker to Falcons in final inning

In their only game of the week, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program watched conference opponent Flambeau come to call April 19. The Knights got on the board first over Flambeau, scoring a run in the opening inning.

Neither team scored in the second inning, but the Falcons recorded two runs in the third. The Knights then answered back with a run of their own. Flambeau added four runs in the fourth inning, while the Knights only could come up with one on their side of the inning.

It was all Flambeau in the fifth, with two more runs in for the Falcons. The Knights then went on a hot streak in the sixth inning, knocking in eight runs to Flambeau’s one. But, Flambeau bounced back in the seventh, to add four more to the score.

The Knights came up with two more runs to tie the game, but Flambeau snuck past them in the eighth inning to bring a run across the plate. In the bottom of the eighth, the Knights couldn’t come up with one more run in the final inning and the game went to Flambeau, 14-13.

Sophomore Brooke Anderson went all eight innings for her Knights team, giving up 13 hits, 14 runs and 3 walks, while striking out 2 batters.

On the offensive side, sophomore Makya Hetherington led with 4 hits, followed by sophomore Teryn Close, who ended with 2. Juniors Michayla Turchen and Rachel Schilling, Anderson and sophomore Grace Harycki, each had 1 hit.

Senior Teaira Spaeth recorded 3 runs, while freshmen Bralee Schroeder and Izabelle Schwingle each came up with 1 run. Schilling finished the day with 3 runs, while Turchen had 2, and Anderson, Hetherington and Harycki all had 1 run each.

Anderson walked 3 times and Spaeth had 2 walks in the game.
