Hornets steal one over the Thunder, but Cards prevail

By Ginna Young

Cadott’s softball program got a win at home over the week, but dropped an away game later on.

April 19 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (W 12-11)

Welcoming the Thunder to their field, the Hornets put on a show for the crowd.

Early on in the game, neither team would score until the third inning, when Cadott got on the board, with four runs. The Thunder answered back in the fourth, putting up three runs, but Cadott got two more runs in the fifth, to give them a 6-3 lead.

“Makenna (Barone) did an amazing job off the mound and had a big contribution offensively,” said coach Kari Moldrem.

Both teams scored two runs in the sixth inning, while Osseo- Fairchild added six more in the seventh inning. Cadott wouldn’t go down and scored four runs of their own, to take the win, 12-11.

“Lauryn (Goettl) cranked up the excitement, with her three-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh,” said Moldrem, adding that Goettl was running so hard, she didn’t even know that the ball went over the fence, until Moldrem told her to slow down and touch home. “Laken (Ryan) and Elly (Eiler) came up to the plate with ice in their veins. Laken laid down a perfect bunt to get on first and then Elly hit a laser to center field, allowing Laken to score all the way from first base.”

On the mound, the junior Barone went six innings, with only 4 hits, while allowing 7 walks and 5 runs, and striking out 5. The junior Goettl then took a turn pitching, for 3 hits, 6 runs and 3 walks.

On the offensive side, senior Olivia Goodman, Barone and the junior Eiler each came up with 3 hits, followed by Goettl and junior Ryan, with 2. Freshmen Rilei Weeks and Kasey Moldrem each added 1 hit.

“We had some adversities and mistakes that we were able to overcome, and pull off an exciting come-from-behind win,” said Kari Moldrem.

April 21 vs. Thorp conference (L 15-5)

Next up, was Thorp on the road, where Cadott’s bats went cold. The Cardinals put four runs on the board in the first inning, followed by one in each of the next two innings. The Hornets got a run in the second and three in the third, with their fifth, and final, run in the fourth inning.

Thorp went on to score four in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth, to take a 15-5 win.

Barone went four innings on the mound, giving up 7 hits for 10 runs, walking 4 and striking out 6. Goettl pitched 1.33 innings, with 4 hits and 5 runs, with a walk.

Goodman, Barone, Goettl, Ryan, Eiler, Weeks and junior Morgan Moldrem, all had 1 hit in the game.
