Hornets crown three youth wrestlers at State

The Youth State Tournament was full of excitement and hard work March 25-26, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, as the Cadott Hornets wrestlers saw three athletes make podium. The student-athletes won their way to the tournament through the Regional hosted by River Falls the weekend before.

“As coaches, the level of effort and sportsmanship was what impressed us most,” said Dan Yeager. “We remained humble in victory and level-headed when defeated. Athletes who are willing to battle, listen to instruction and control their emotions, have incredible potential.”

As a team, Cadott had the 18th most team points and the 13th most wins (42) of 308 schools. Three individuals for the Hornets made the podium, while three individuals missed the podium by one match and 14 wrestlers were able to get at least one win, with seven wrestlers getting three or more wins.

“Having 16 wrestlers down there is great for our program, and I believe we can have 20 or more down there next year,” said Yeager. “Congrats to those who wrestled hard and represented Cadott so well this weekend.”

Yeager said it was wonderful for the kids to look up in the stands and seeing wrestlers eagerly watching their friends competing on the mat.

It shows how invested the team is...for those who haven’t met their goal of making it to the State tournament, to still desire to travel and watch their teammates battle. He also said the success of the program is owed, in part, to Meagan Sonnentag, Rachel Faber, Rachel Phelps and Kayla Krueger, for all their work throughout this season, as well as to the efforts and support of parents, community and many coaches.

Reaching the podium for Cadott, were Iszy Sonnentag (95 pounds), who placed third; William Wellner (105), fourth place; and Tessa York (115), fifth place.

“I am extremely proud of our youth wrestlers’ effort and sportsmanship,” said high school coach Josh Spaeth, adding that Yeager and coach Jon Erickson do an amazing job leading the youth program. “Our future looks very bright.”
