Lake Holcombe’s girls basketball program acted as host for the Cornell squad Feb. 15, for a conference match-up. The Chieftains took on Cornell to close out the regular season, jumping ahead in the first half, for a 30-7 lead going into the break.

The Chiefs stepped up their scoring in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to Lake Holcombe and the Chieftains took a 67-33 victory.

“So nice to see both of my seniors get on the score board and play well as a team with our younger players,” said Lake Holcombe coach Jennifer Lechleitner. “Their leadership has been so supportive, and great to have our seniors Brooke Lechleitner and Carly Vavra for four years.”

Junior Justine Kane led the way for the Chieftains, with 17 points, while B. Lechleitner was right behind, with 16. Sophomore Emma Lechleitner recorded 13 points, six of which came from three-pointers, followed by junior Karly Kirkman, with 12 points.

Vavra also knocked down a three, finishing with 5 points and freshman Abby Jones contributed 4 points.

On Cornell’s side, sophomore Grace Harycki shot from the arc three times, ending with 13 points. Sophomore Lauren Samardzich knocked down two long range shots for 6 points, while junior Kelsea Popp had 6 points.

Freshman Bralee Schroeder, sophomores Makya Hetherington and Marcella Boehm, and senior Teaira Spaeth all chipped in with 2 points each.

Lake Holcombe finishes the regular season with a 15-5 overall record and in second place in the East Lakeland Conference, at 11-2.
