Cadott comes up short against Crickets, Macks

By Ginna Young

Cadott hit a slump over the week, with the girls basketball program coming up short in their conference games.

Feb. 8 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 50-42)

Heading to Fall Creek, the Hornets were in for a battle, with the game evenly matched in the first half, all square, at 21-21.

“We played tough and did a lot of good things,” said coach Dave Hazuga.

Although the second half didn’t get away from the Hornets, Fall Creek pulled away just enough to take a 50-42 win.

“The girls are up for these challenges, we came up a little short tonight,” said Hazuga.

Leading for Cadott, was junior Laken Ryan, who had 11 points, followed by junior Lauryn Goettl. Junior Elly Eiler was right behind, with 8 points. Sophomores Bradee Burish and Emma Kowalczyk each had 3 points, and junior Morgan Moldren rounded out the scoring, with 2 points.

“We have things to keep working on,” said Hazuga.

Feb. 11 vs. McDonell conference (L 54-36)

Another tough challenge came in the form of McDonell, who paid Cadott a visit to end the week. The first half was almost all McDonell, with the Hornets falling behind to trail 35-17 by the break.

“They had a good run late in the first half, that put us down at halftime,” said Hazuga. “Our defense was much better in the second half.”

While Cadott held the Macks to just 19 points in the second half, the Hornets only added 19 points of their own to the score. With the first-half deficit too great to overcome, McDonell claimed a 54-36 victory.

“It was a tough conference game,” said Hazuga. “We came out ready to play.”

Eiler shot for 17 points on the night, including a threepointer. Ryan knocked down two shots from long range for 6 points. Burish finished the night with 5 points, followed by Goettl and Kowalczyk, with each adding 3. Junior Eva Enestvedt chipped in with 2 points.

Cadott’s record now sits at 17-6 on the year, and 8-6 in the West Cloverbelt Conference.

“Overall the effort was great,” said Hazuga.
