Cadott picks up wins out of the conference
By Ginna Young
Taking a breather from conference action, Cadott’s girls basketball program hosted two opponents to test them, as the end of the season draws near.
Feb. 1 vs. Augusta non-conference (W 52-33)
Having just faced an opponent the night before, Cadott may have been a little tired, coming into the game against Augusta, but you’d never have known it.
“Back-to-back games is always challenging, but our girls seem to respond well to that,” said coach Dave Hazuga.
Cadott took a 36-24 lead into the break, then limited the Beavers to just 14 points in the second half. In the end, it would be the Hornets who claimed the win, 66-38.
“We shot the ball well in this game,” said Hazuga.
Juniors Lauryn Goettl and Laken Ryan each knocked down four shots from long range, with Goettl recording 21 points, while Ryan had 12. It was a night of threepoint shots, as junior Elly Eiler shot two (ending with 16 points), while sophomore Emma Kowalczyk notched one (9 points), as did junior Morgan Moldrem and freshman man Kasey Moldrem.
Junior Eva Enestvedt also got in on the scoring, with 2 points.
“We are having fun with the focus of trying to get better, challenges are there every game,” said Hazuga.
Feb. 3 vs. Bloomer non-conference (W 66-38)
Two days later, Bloomer was up on the schedule, with Cadott continuing their strong defense and good scoring. The first half was all Cadott, with the Hornets taking a 25-12 lead into the break.
Bloomer picked up the pace somewhat in the second to make it a closer contest, but Cadott would prevail, bringing in a 52-33 victory.
“We played a pretty good game tonight, I thought it was one of our better defensive games,” said Hazuga. “We have a tough schedule to finish out the regular season, I thought tonight’s win was a big one.”
Eiler led for the Hornets, with 17 points, including a three-pointer, while Goettl came right behind, also shooting a three and ending with 14 points. Enestvedt was next, with 8 points, followed by Ryan, who had 6 points from three-point shots.
Kowalczyk also knocked down a three, ending with 5 points. Sophomore Bradee Burish rounded out the scoring, with 2 points. After the wins, Cadott improves their overall record to 17-4.
“We enjoy playing with each other and it shows,” said Hazuga.
