The Cornell-Gilman Wolfpack Wrestlers were ready to compete at the Lakeland Conference Championship in Luck, seeing success Feb. 5.

“We had a good day on the mat,” said coach Greg Sonnentag. “Overall, the boys won the matches we expected them to win and competed hard in the matches in which they were the lower seed.”

Receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, junior Braeden Person (152) went on to take the semi-final match over Bruce’s Johnny Jacobs, then triumphed over Brockton Naessen (Shell Lake), with a 5-2 decision, for his first conference championship.

Sophomore Troy Duellman (145) also received a bye in the first round, then got the win in the semis over Brandon Lucas, of Luck-Frederic-Grant-Siren, before coming in second to Clear Lake’s Tyler Sunday, by fall, in 5:43, in the championship match.

Freshman Preston Fredrickson finished the day in third place, winning over Noah Lauterbach, Shell Lake, in a 7-3 decision.

The Wolfpack will now take part in the WIAA Division 3 Regionals at Cadott, Saturday, Feb. 12. “Hopefully, they can build off this going into next week,” said Sonnentag.
