By Ginna Young

It was an exciting week for the Cadott girls basketball squad, as they came up with a win over the league leaders, before taking on another tough opponent in the conference.

Jan. 18 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (W 66-61)

Going into the game, it was a given, the match on the road at Osseo-Fairchild was going to be a battle. The score was evenly matched in the first half, with Cadott taking a slim 34-32 point lead into the break.

The Thunder didn’t want to concede the victory, but the Hornets refused to back down and hung on to bring home a 66-61 win.

“We got off to a good start and kept the lead the whole game,” said coach Dave Hazuga. “We never really had a letdown, it was a game we stayed consistent.”

Leading for the Hornets, was junior Lauryn Goettl, with 29 points, while knocking down four shots from long range.

Junior Elly Eiler came next, with 18 points, followed by sophomore Emma Kowalczyk, with 8.

Junior Laken Ryan also added a three-pointer, finishing up with 7 points, while junior Eva Enestvedt rounded out the scoring with 4 points.

“They (Osseo-Fairchild) are the top team in the conference, so we just played aggressive,” said Hazuga. “It’s a really good win for the girls.”

Jan. 20 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (L 63-41)

The next battle came in the form of an away game at Stanley-Boyd, but Cadott struggled to score against the long-time rivals.

“We didn’t play our best game on Thursday,” said Hazuga. “We didn’t rebound as well as we usually do, but the girls continue to put out great effort.”

The Hornets went into halftime down 36-23 and the second half, didn’t fare any better, as the Orioles outscored Cadott, 27-18. In the end, the conference match went to Stanley-Boyd, 63-41.

Eiler ended the night with 15 points, with Goettl right behind, with 11. Kowalczyk came next, with 9. Ryan added 4 points and Enestvedt chipped in with 2.
