Injuries have been a big factor throughout the season for the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Wolfpack Wrestling program, but their athletes aren’t giving up. Over the week, the healthy competitors faced multiple opponents on the road.
Jan. 13 Turtle Lake Quad
Heading to Turtle Lake for a quad, the Wolfpack still is not at full capacity on the roster.
“With injuries, we are down to two wrestlers,” said coach Greg Sonnentag.
Sophomore Troy Duellman (145 pounds) continues his winning ways, as Unity found, with Duellman winning by pin, in 1:23. Junior Braeden Person (152) also came up with the win, but Unity took the match-up, 30-9.
Duellman also won over Bruce’s Harold Garcia, by 1:12 pin, and Person got the victory over John Jacobs in 1:12. However, Bruce took the team win, 30-12.
Against Turtle Lake-Clayton, Duellman and Person each received forfeit wins, with the host team taking a 36-12 victory.
Jan. 15 Ladysmith Invitational
Next up on the schedule, was the Ladysmith Invitational, where Duellman saw good success, winning over Sander King, Black River Falls, by fall, in 1:43 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Duellman got the win over Phillips’ Jesse Bruhn, by a 3:14 fall. He then fell in the semi-finals, to Blake Delsman, of Reedsville, by a 7-1 decision.
Duellman then met Alex Poirier, from Bloomer-Colfax, in the third place match, falling to Poirier in a 4-2 decision.
“His third place match was an exciting one that came down to the end,” said Sonnentag. “He was in a good position to win the match at the end, but just couldn’t quite capitalize.”
Person fell in his first match, to Marathon’s Jacob Smith, by fall, in 4:47.
“He was in control of the match through the first half, leading 3-0, when he made a couple mistakes and got caught on his back,” said Sonnentag.
Person then received a bye and won in the second consolation round over Bruce’s Harold Garcia, with a 7-0 decision. Person ended the invitational, by winning over Dalton Schmidt, of Chequamegon, in a 1:53 fall.
“He finished the day strong with two pins,” said Sonnentag.
