Chiefs do battle with Warriors on the road

By Ginna Young

Heading to Winter for a conference match-up, the Cornell boys basketball squad was prepared for a hard-fought game Jan. 11.

By halftime, the score wasn’t what the Chiefs would have hoped, as Winter led at the break, by eight.

“Winter did a nice job feeding back-door cutters, who took smart angles to the basket,” said coach Steve Parker. “They had a balanced attack, with four players who scored in double digits.”

Coming out of the second half, Cornell’s scoring improved, as did their defense.

“Our defense forced Winter to miss 16 shots in the paint,” said Parker. “However, we allowed 14 offensive rebounds, which contributed to 13 easy put-back points.”

Time ran out for the Chiefs and Winter claimed the victory, 64-53.

“Offensively, we only made half of our layups and bunny shots,” said Parker. “We out rebounded them, but lost the turnover battle. We made too many forced, sloppy passes.”

Coming up with a “monster” game for Cornell, was junior Blake Anders, whose 17 of 19 points came in the second half. He also nabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

Junior Avery Turany had 9 points, 7 assists and 3 steals, while junior Dawson Munson had 9 hard-earned rebounds, to go along with 7 points, with three of those coming from beyond the arc.

Junior Dylan Bowe ended the night with 8 points, six of those from three-point range, 8 boards, 4 assists and defensively drew his 13th charge of the season. Sophomore Bentley Spangler recorded 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals, and sophomore Jayden Joas-Shaw knocked down a three-pointer.
