WOLFPACK WRESTLING

Julian Krizan got to the championship match at 182 pounds and Troy Duellman and Braeden Person won placement matches to lead the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe Wolfpack to its 11th-place finish at Saturday’s 15-team Auburndale Invitational.

Preston Fredrickson added a sixth-place finish at 126 pounds to fill out the Wolfpack’s four-wrestler roster for the tournament. The team scored 137 points to beat the host Eagles (131), Tri-County (102), Thorp/Owen-Withee (98) and Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli (4).

“They all had some quality matches that should help us build on going forward,” head coach Greg Sonnentag said.

Krizan was the second seed in an eightman weight class. He pinned Erik Martinez of Abbotsford-Colby in 33 seconds in the quarterfinal round and pinned Tri-County’s Jovanni Mata in 1:10 in the semifinals to earn a shot at undefeated Sloan Welch of Auburndale in the final. Welch, though, improved to 9-0 with a pin at the 4:28 mark. Krizan is 3-2 to start the winter.

At 145 pounds, Duellman drew a firstround bye in the 12-man bracket and then earned a 12-4 major decision over Crandon’s Carsyn Mayer. Black River Falls senior Jackson McCormick (8-1) shut out Duellman in a 9-0 major decision during the semifinals. Duellman, however, improved to 7-1 by rebounding and solidly defeating Eau Claire North’s Carson Duerkop 6-1 in the third-place bout.

Person wrestled in a 10-man bracket at 152 pounds and started with a pin in 3:38 over La Crosse Logan-Central’s Nolan Niemann. Royall’s Ethan Palamaruk pinned Person in 5:07 in the quarterfi nals, sending the Wolfpack junior to the fifth- through eighth-place bracket. There, Person (6-3) was a 4-0 winner over Pittsville’s Hunter McDaniel and a winner by pin in 1:04 over Abbotsford-Colby’s Jacob Hoppe to take fifth.

Fredrickson (4-3) was pinned in 1:57 by Tri-County’s Sergio Rodriguez and in 1:05 by Eau Claire North’s Jonah Berg in his two matches for the day.

Crandon won the team championship with 374 points, while La Crosse Logan-Central (314.5) and Royall (290) were second and third. Abbotsford-Colby (221.5) was fourth, followed by Eau Claire North (215), Chequamegon (210), Marathon (187), Manawa (186), Pittsville (184) and Black River Falls (146).

The Wolfpack added a quad in Stanley- Boyd Tuesday that was held after this week’s early holiday deadline for The Star News. Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe is scheduled to compete in the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic in River Falls Dec. 29-30.

Clear Lake Quad

The Wolfpack had just three available wrestlers for Thursday’s Clear Lake Lakeland Conference Quad, but all three won at least one match in dual meets against the host Warriors and Shell Lake.

“We had Ali Blodgett out with injury and Julian Krizan and family were aiding the Stanley community on Thursday,” Sonnentag said. “Overall, the kids did well. They worked hard and put themselves in good positions often. We need to continue to work on finishing moves and putting together a complete match.”

Clear Lake beat the Wolfpack 48-3. Duellman was Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe’s winner, riding takedowns in the first and third periods and a two-point second-period near fall to a 7-1 win over Cayden Paulson in the 145-pound match.

At 152 pounds, Person was right with state qualifier Tyler Sunday, trailing 2-0 in the second period, when one quick move by Sunday got Person pinned at 3:24.

Preston Fredrickson got into a highscoring first period with Mitchell Anderson at 132 pounds, taking a 5-0 lead. Anderson rallied to tie it at 6-6 before a Fredrickson reversal put him up 8-6. But Anderson started the second period with control and pinned Fredrickson at 2:41. Clear Lake won six matches by forfeit.

Six forfeits gave Shell Lake a 30-15 win over the Wolfpack, who actually won all three contested bouts.

Fredrickson got takedowns early and late to defeat Tanner Bandoli 5-0 at 126 pounds. Duellman needed just 1:24 to pin Carter Allen in the 145-pound match and Person pinned Joseph Harrington in 1:06 at 152 pounds.

Turtle Lake-Clayton beat the Wolfpack 30-18 in a dual where no actual matches were held. The teams’ wrestlers simply did not match up weight-wise.

While Fredrickson (126), Duellman (145) and Person (152) earned forfeits for the Wolfpack, Wyatt Nitchey (170), Ryan Shortess (182), Parker Lytle (195), Bradley Beecroft (220) and Caleb Tinsley (285) earned forfeits for Turtle Lake-Clayton.

Clear Lake beat Turtle Lake-Clayton 36-28 and Shell Lake 57-6 and Shell Lake edged Turtle Lake-Clayton 36-30 in the night’s other duals.
