Hornets dominate Boyceville, face hard Devils Duals

Challenging weather couldn’t keep the Cadott grapplers from hitting the mats, first against Boyceville, then at the Woodside Dome Tournament in Wisconsin Dells.

Dec. 9 vs. Boyceville (W 57-18)

Heading to Boyceville, the Hornets were ready for the always competitive team, winning all but three of the matchups.

Junior Brayden Sonnentag (132) won by fall in 1:02 over Ryker Benitz, followed by junior Nick Fasbender (138), who won over Jake Bialzik by fall, in 4:15.

Junior Tristan Drier (152) won by 0.50 fall over Keegan Cole, while junior Cole Pfeiffer (160) came up with the win over Nick Hillman by fall, in 3:35. Junior Dawson Webster (170) got the win over Ira Bialzi, with a 4-0 decision and senior Gavin Tegels (220) won by 1:09 fall over John Klefstad.

Receiving forfeit wins for Cadott, were freshman Brock Nesvacil (106) and senior Kaleb Sonnentag (145).

Dec. 11 Devils Duals

Reaching their destination before a major snowstorm hit, Cadott faced five opponents in what is known as the Devils Duals in Wisconsin Dells.

“We faced some very strong competition this weekend,” said coach Josh Spaeth. “We wrestled top-ranked Division 1, 2 and 3 teams.”

Defeating Portage, the Hornets won that match-up, 52-18, then took out Reedsburg, 57-21. In a close contest, Cadott lost to Mineral Point (returning State champions), 36-33, and Stoughton, 57-27.

In the seventh place match, the Hornets couldn’t pull out the win, watching Prairie du Chien take the win, 41-34. Cadott finished the day in eighth place, out of 28 teams.

“As a person can see, we wrestled some of the best teams in the state and we competed very well,” said Spaeth. “If things go a little different in each dual, we were capable of winning. Great team effort and a special thanks to all the fans that traveled down to support our team.”

Drier, Pfeiffer and Tegels all finished 5-0 on the weekend, while B. Sonnentag and Webster went 4-1.

“Our team competed well, but we learned that we have work to do,” said Spaeth. “We need to finish matches better and need to stay off our backs in order to beat the better teams. The season is early and we will continue to get better.”
