In the highly anticipated match-up between Lake Holcombe and Cornell’s volleyball squads, a conference clash took place Oct. 12. The Chieftains hosted Cornell, looking to pull in a win over the league leaders.

The first set saw the Chiefs the victors, 25-19, and Lake Holcombe struggled to find their offense in the second set, with Cornell taking the win, 25-15.

“The team came out strong in each set and did some things really well,” said Lake Holcombe coach Beth Meddaugh. “When they fell behind in the first and third sets, they worked together to rally, but fell just short.”

It was a battle for the third set, but Cornell pulled out the win, 25-21.

“One thing we have been working on throughout the season, is adaptability on the court and being able to play in several different positions,” said Meddaugh. “The players proved in the match against Cornell, that they have made much progress in this area this year.”

With the win, Cornell remained undefeated in the East Lakeland Conference.

Leading for Cornell, was senior Jayda Turchen, with 14 digs, 11 kills and 2 aces, followed by sophomore Brooke Anderson, with 11 digs and 4 aces. Junior Michayla Turchen ended the night with 6 kills, 9 digs and 4 aces, and senior Teaira Spaeth had 9 assists, 6 digs and 4 kills.

Sophomore Makya Heatherington came away with 12 assists and 4 aces, while freshman Briana Glaus added 6 kills. Sophomore Brooke Sime recorded 9 digs and 2 aces, and freshman Bralee Schroeder finished with 9 assists and 2 aces. Junior Ava Larson chipped in with 2 kills.

On Lake Holcombe’s side, sophomore Ava Story led with 6 kills, while on assists, freshman Chloe Lee had 7 and junior Hannah Wincek had 5. Sophomore Ella Hartzell followed that with 15 digs, while senior Josi Elmberg and Lee each had 8.

“I’m also very proud of the team’s work on the Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Night,” said Meddaugh. “The team was committed to bringing back this service project and they worked together to make it successful.”
