Injuries put an end to rivalry match-up

In a battle between partners turned rivals, the Cornell and Lake Holcombe football programs met in Cornell, Oct. 15, for a game between the eight-man teams.
“We came ready to play this game,” said Lake Holcombe coach Brandon Baldry. “We have battled inconsistencies and not coming out strong in many games this year.”
However, the final outcome wouldn’t be what anyone wished for, with significant injuries causing Cornell to concede the game in the third quarter.
Lake Holcombe claimed the 39-0 victory, with Cornell’s season at an end, because of the injuries to the team.
“I’m proud of our town, district and students for their effort to exemplify the spirit of competitive sports,” said Cornell coach Craig Braaten, “by acting not only appropriately on and off the field, but also to lead by example for those that are either incapable or unwilling.”
Defensively, Lake Holcombe again rose to the occasion, with senior Sam Ewer recording 6 tackles, 1 safety, 2 tackles for a loss and 1 forced fumble. Senior Colton Minnick had 5 tackles and 1 interception, while juniors Max Sauerwein and Cead Ewer each had 5 tackles.
Offensively, Minnick ended with 85 yards passing and a touchdown, and 79 yards rushing. Sauerwein recorded 95 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, while junior Parker Miller caught a 50-yard pass for a touchdown and sophomore Trent Nitek had a catch for 35 yards.
Baldry says while it was a good win for his team, he wishes Cornell nothing but the best, as they move forward with healing from their injuries sustained in the game.
