Cornell takes title with a perfect conference record

For the second year in a row, the Cornell volleyball squad came up with the conference crown, going unbeaten in the East Lakeland Conference.
Oct. 14 vs. Winter conference (W 3-0)
One team was the only thing standing in the way of Cornell’s conference title and that team was Winter. Hosting Winter, Cornell made quick work of the sets – 25-14, 25-17 and 25-18.
“Back-to-back undefeated conference champions,” said coach Amy Lorenzen.
On the night, senior Jayda Turchen ended with 8 kills, followed by junior Michayla Turchen, with 7 kills, and senior Teaira Spaeth, with 5. M. Turchen also had 11 digs, while Spaeth and sophomore Makya Heatherington each had 9 digs.
Freshman Bralee Schroeder and Spaeth each notched 10 assists.
Oct. 16 vs. Shell Lake Invitational (L 6-4)
After claiming the title, the Chiefs then headed to Shell Lake, for a Saturday of matches.
First up, was Unity, where Cornell dropped the sets, 25-11 and 25-18. Solon Springs came next, with Cornell taking the dropping set, 25-18, but bouncing back for the second set, 25-11. The third set would go to Solon Springs, 15-11.
The Chiefs then faced hosts Shell Lake. The first set was a close affair, with Cornell picking up the win, 28-26. But, the other sets went to Shell Lake, 25-15 and 15-8.
Drummond was the final opponent of the day, with Cornell taking the win, 25-15 and 25-22.
M. Turchen finished the day with 24 kills and 19 digs, and J. Turchen had 11 kills, 12 aces and 17 digs. Schroeder came up with 25 assists, while Spaeth ended with 11 and Heatherington had 18.
Sophomore Brooke Anderson chipped in with 7 aces and 26 digs, and sophomore Brooke Sime served consistent and strong, with 28 attempts and 11 aces. Freshman Briana Glaus added 4 kills and sophomore Teryn Close had 4 digs.
“We are now 20-11 going into playoffs,” said Lorenzen.
As the No. 8 seed, Cornell will host No. 9 Owen-Withee Oct. 19, facing off in the opening Regional.
