Cadott makes playoffs with last home-game win

By Ginna Young

One game was all the Cadott football team needed to make the playoffs this year, and that one game came against Spring Valley at home Oct. 15.

To start the game, Cadott got on the board first, with a touchdown hand-off from junior Tristan Drier to senior Gavin Tegels in the first quarter. The extra point kick from junior Peter Weir was good and the Hornets were up 7-0.

Spring Valley struck back in the second quarter with a touchdown, but Cadott answered back with another hand-off from Drier to Tegels for a touchdown. Halftime saw Cadott up 14-6.

Coming out in the third quarter, the Hornets scored a touchdown, this time, with Drier scampering into the endzone. Cadott scored once more in the game, on a 20-yard touchdown from senior Ryan Sonnentag.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and the conference victory went to Cadott, 28-6.

“Offensive line played the best they have all year, against a great defense,” said coach Jeff Goettl. “Defense played benddon’t- break and extremely physical against a great offense.”

Offensively, Cadott had 46 yards passing from Drier and 29 yards from Tegels. Senior Kaleb Sonnentag led on rushing, with 71 yards, while Tegels ended with 50, junior Tegan Ritter had 28, junior Nick Fasbender came up with 16 and Drier finished with 7.

On receiving, Drier recorded 29 yards, followed by R. Sonnentag, with 50. Tegels added 15, K. Sonnentag had 10 and Ritter chipped in with 1.

“Team stepped up and really played with playoffs on the line,” said Goettl.

Not only will the No. 6 seeded Hornets play No. 3 Unity on the road Oct. 22, but Goettl was also chosen as the Packers High School Coach of the Week. With the award, Goettl will receive $1,000 for the football program and a feature on an upcoming Gameday Program.
