Cornell’s volleyball program is on track with where they want to be as the season winds down, with an unblemished conference record.

Oct. 4 vs. Winter conference (W 3-1)

It was off to Winter, to begin the week, with Cornell easily taking the first and second sets, 25-13. Winter rallied in the third set, 28-26, but the Chiefs wouldn’t be denied and took the fourth set, 25-16, for the win.

Oct. 5 vs. Birchwood conference (W 3-0)

Next up on the week, Birchwood came to call. Cornell took the first set in a 25-16 victory, but the second set was much closer – 25-20 – for the win.

Birchwood ran out of steam in the third and final set, and Cornell claimed the 25-12 win.

“We are now 10-0 in conference,” said coach Amy Lorenzen.

Oct. 9 vs. Gilman Invitational (L 3-1)

To finish out the week, the Chiefs traveled to Gilman over the weekend, for a seventh place finish at the invitational.

In pool play, Cornell dropped the sets to Laona-Wabeno, 25-20 and 25-23. The Chiefs then faced off against Alma Center Lincoln, dropping the first set, 25-15. Cornell bounced back for a 25-20 win, but couldn’t pull out the victory, dropping a close third set, 15-12.

Up next, Cornell played the host school Gilman, but watched victory go to the Pirates, 25-17 and 25-23. In the seventh-place match, Cornell beat Flambeau in the first set, 25-7, but dropped the second set, 27-25. The Chiefs refused to go down, and brought in a 16-14 win for the third and final set.

Winning is great, but the Chiefs also want to honor their parents and seniors against Winter, Oct. 14. It’s also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise money for cancer patients, with Cornell traveling to Lake Holcombe Oct. 12.

“Next week, all fans should wear pink to both our games for dig pink night,” said Lorenzen.
