Matches over the week added to Cornell’s volleyball record, with a pair of conference wins.
Sept. 21 vs. New Auburn conference (W 3-1)
The Chiefs headed to New Auburn, where Cornell couldn’t quite come up with the first set win (25-23), but they shook off the opening set blues and went on to win the following three sets, 25-8, 25-20 and 25-12.
Junior Michayla Turchen ended with 10 kills, 6 aces and 15 digs, and senior Jayda Turchen had 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Brooke Sime added 9 kills.
Sophomore Brooke Anderson had 20 serve attempts, with 3 aces and only 3 errors. She also had 12 digs. Sophomore Makya Heatherington led the team in assists, with 14, followed by senior Teaira Spaeth, with 10. Spaeth also added 5 kills to the match.
Freshman Bralee Schroeder rounded out the scoring, with 9 assists and 4 aces.
Sept. 23 vs. Flambeau conference (W 3-2) Two nights later, it was Cornell’s turn to host, with Homecoming spirts high as Flambeau came to call.
“It was a great showing for both the Flambeau and Cornell crowd,” said coach Amy Lorenzen. “We love having fans in the gym again.”
The first set just wasn’t there for the Chiefs, with Cornell watching Flambeau take the 25-18 win.
“Our serves were not falling, so the ladies had to contribute in other ways,” said Lorenzen.
After figuring out a few things, Cornell came back to win the second and third sets, 25-18 and 25-19. However, Flambeau wouldn’t give up, and won that set, 25-18.
Cornell was determined not to lose on their home court and finished the match with a 15-11 victory.
M. Turchen had a stand-out night, with 18 kills, 4 blocks and 5 aces, while Anderson lead the team with 21 digs. J. Turchen was right behind, with 16 digs, and also had 5 kills for the night.
Schroeder and Heatherington each had 13 and 12, respectively.
The win brings the Chiefs’ record to 7-0 in conference.
“Tonight’s homecoming match definitely gave the fans a show,” said Lorenzen.
