Chieftains nearly pull one out over Falcons
By Ginna Young
It was a perfect night for football, Sept. 10, as the Lake Holcombe squad played host to Flambeau. The game also coincided with parents night, with the Chieftains doing their best to put on a show for their parental support system.
Flambeau got on the board first, with a touchdown in the first quarter, followed by a successful two-point conversion, while holding the Chieftains scoreless. The second quarter saw Lake Holcombe record a touchdown, with a 20-yard run from senior Colton Minnick, but with a failed two-point conversion.
The Falcons scored again to go up 16-6 at halftime, but the Chieftains came storming out in the third quarter, putting up another eight points, after a two-yard run from Minnick and the conversion good by junior Max Sauerwein.
Flambeau also scored a touchdown in the third, to make it 22-14 in their favor. Lake Holcombe wasn’t done by a longshot and managed to get on the board once more, with a seven-yard touchdown run from junior Parker Miller.
However, the two-point conversion was no good and in the end, the game went to Flambeau by a hair, 22-20. Although the match-up didn’t go the way of Lake Holcombe, the Chieftains put a scare into Flambeau, fighting for every point on the board.
Minnick led in passing for Lake Holcombe, with 69 yards and had 76 yards rushing. Miller ended with 35 yards rushing, followed by Sauerwein, with 15, and junior Nate Jones, with 3.
Jones finished the night with 55 yards receiving and had three tackles on defense. Sauerwein came up with 14 yards receiving and two tackles. Miller chipped in with 2 tackles, while Minnick and senior Ryne Giencke each had 1.
