Miscue leaves Knights team just short of State

It wasn’t quite the outcome the Cornell-Lake Holcombe Knights Track team looked for at Sectional competition June 17, as the squad headed to Cameron, but the athletes represented their schools well.

“I am proud of all of the athletes,” said coach Laurie Bowe. “They all gave everything they had.”

The Knights looked for the 4x200-meter relay team of senior Austin Bowe, and sophomores Avery Turany, Dylan Bowe and Blake Anders to make an appearance at State, but a miscue shut down those hopes and the team was disqualifi ed.

“Unfortunately, we had a dropped baton or we would have had a run for State,” said L. Bowe.

Taking ninth at Sectionals, was the 4x100-meter relay of Turany, A. Bowe, D. Bowe and Anders, in a time of 47.84, while the 4x400-meter relay of D. Bowe, A. Bowe, freshman Daniel Person and Anders, placed ninth (3:48.53).

Individually on the boys side, Turany ended tied for 10th in the pole vault event (10-00).

For the girls, the team of freshmen Brooke Sime, Marcella Boehm and Haily Duffy, and junior Carly Vavra, finished 11th (56.75), while the 4x200-meter relay team also finished 11th (2:00.41), consisting of Sime. Boehm, Duffy and freshman Lauren Smardzich.

Junior Brooke Lechleitner came in ninth in the 400meter dash (1:05.11), and 13th in the 200-meter dash (28.48).

Although the Knights didn’t send any on to State and say goodbye to their senior athletes, L. Bowe is already focused on what’s to come with the track program.

“I am very much looking forward to next season,” she said.
