Cadott comes up a little short in start of playoffs

Giving the players a chance for some cooler temperatures, the opening playoff game for the Cadott baseball squad was pushed later in the night June 10, in the away match-up. Facing off against Whitehall, the Hornets got on the board first, scoring three runs in the first inning, while holding Whitehall scoreless.

Neither team put up any runs in the second, but Cadott added another run in the third, while Whitehall finally scored, notching two runs, and the game stood at 4-2 in favor of the Hornets.

“We played a very good game and Nelson Wahl pitched the best game we have had all year,” said coach Spencer Kempf. “Dylan Davis and Ryan Swenson came up big with runners on base to get runs on the board.

The score remained the same through the fourth and fifth innings, but in the top of the sixth inning, Whitehall’s bats kicked into gear and knocked in six runs. Cadott was unable to muster any offense in the seventh inning and the Regional game went to Whitehall, 8-4.

“In the end, they were the team that was able to capitalize on their base runners,” said Kempf.

The senior Wahl went five innings, only allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, while giving up 4 walks and striking out 8. Seniors Davis and Swenson each took their turn on the mound, giving up a hit each, while Davis allowed 5 runs and Swenson allowed 1.

Davis also walked 4 and Swenson allowed 1 walk.

Offensively, Wahl led the team, with 3 hits, and Swenson was right behind, with 2. Sophomore Tristan Drier, Davis and freshman Connor Roth, each chipped in with a hit. Juniors Ryan Sonnentag and junior Ethan West each added a walk.

“We played our best baseball the last two games of the season and we just came up a little short in Whitehall,” said Kempf. “I’m very proud of how these young men finished up the season.”
