Cadott finishes out regular season with a win

In their final four games of the regular season, the Cadott baseball program wrapped up their conference match-ups over a four-game spread.

The Ramblers notched another run in the third inning, but the Hornets came up with another run in the fourth. Regis wouldn’t quit and got on the board once more in the fifth, to take the 6-5 victory.
“We played a good game against a good team,” said coach Spencer Kempf. “Nelson Wahl pitched a terrific game and Dylan Davis continued his great season at the plate. We just could not find one more hit with runners in scoring position.”
Wahl went four innings, giving up 7 hits and 6 walks, while striking out 6 batters, while Davis picked up an inning. allowing a hit, a walk and striking out 2.
On the offensive side, senior Ryan Swenson led with 3 hits, followed by junior Ryan Sonnentag and freshman Connor Roth, who each had 2 hits. Sophomore Tristan Drier, Wahl, Davis and junior Ethan West, all chipped in with a hit.
June 3 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (L 16-6)
Next up for Cadott, was a match-up against Osseo-Fairchild, but the score got away from the Hornets. Although Cadott put up 5 runs in the second inning, the Thunder an- swered with four runs, then went on to score three runs in each of the next two innings, and six more in the fifth.
Cadott added another run in the fifth inning, but with the large deficit, it was too much to overcome and the Thunder took the game, 16-6.
“We had a difficult time keeping them off the bases today, and they took advantage of their base runners,” said Kempf. “We got off to a good start, but could not hold it.”
Davis pitched four innings in the game, giving up 8 hits and striking out 9, while walking 5. Freshman Ashton Bremness also took a turn, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks. Tegels added 2 hits offensively, while senior Tyler Matherne, Sonnentag and Drier followed that with a hit each.
June 4 vs. McDonell conference (L 16-6)
“Injuries hurt us in this game and we were playing many players at new positions,” said Kempf of the next match-up.
The Hornets didn’t get a chance to rest, as they headed to McDonell, where the Macks jumped out in the first inning, getting on the board with 7 runs.
“A tough first inning put us in a hole early, but we were resilient and were able to put runs together late,” said Kempf.
The Macks added nine more runs over the next three innings, while holding Cadott to their lone run that came in the first. The Hornets’ bats woke up in the fourth inning, scoring four runs and another in the fifth.
McDonell held on to their lead, taking the win, 16-6.
“I hope we can begin to string together more innings where we can get runs on the board, and not just score all of our runs in one or two innings,” said Kempf.
West, freshman Axel Tegels, Swenson and Tegels all took turns on the mound, giving up a combined 14 hits and 13 walks.
Drier and Sonnentag added 2 hits each for the offense, with Davis, G. Tegels, Matherne and Roth recording a hit each.
June 7 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (W 3-1)
Playing host, the Hornets took on rival Stanley-Boyd in the season-ender before Regionals.
“The boys played a sound game defensively and our pitching was the best I’ve seen all year,” said Kempf. “We had a few breaks on offense that helped us pull away late.”
The Orioles got on the board first, with a run in the opening inning and Cadott would get their turn on the board in the third. The fourth inning remained scoreless, but by the fifth, the Hornets added two more runs to take the 3-1 victory.
