Cadott takes out Regis, but drops the next two games

The Cadott baseball program celebrated a big win over the week, getting the victory over Regis, before seeing the next two games go to their opponents.

May 18 vs. Regis conference (W 10-5)

The first game of the week, saw the Hornets host Regis in a conference match-up, with Cadott getting the jump on the scoreboard early, with five runs in the first inning.

“It was great for the guys to put runs on the board early against a good Regis team,” said coach Spencer Kempf.

The Ramblers struck back in the second with a run, while both teams remained scoreless in the third inning. The Hornets added another five runs in the fourth to Regis’ one. Regis knocked in two more in the fifth inning, then one in the sixth, but it wouldn’t matter, as the Hornets walked away with a 10-5 win.

“Dylan Davis gave us exactly what we needed on the mound,” said Kempf. “He threw strikes all game and put us in a position to win. The defense worked hard and made the plays they needed to make to back up their pitcher.”

The senior Davis went seven innings, giving up 7 hits and striking out 5. Senior Nelson Wahl pitched two innings in the game, allowing 3 hits.

Davis also did well on offense, recording 3 hits and 2 runs batted in (RBI), while senior Ryan Swenson and junior Ryan Sonnentag each ended with 2 hits, with Swenson coming up with 5 RBIs. Wahl, senior Tyler Matherne, juniors Gavin Tegels and Ethan West, sophomore Tristan Drier and freshman Connor Roth, each added 1 hit.

“I was very proud with how this team responded after a tough loss on Monday,” said Kempf.

May 20 vs. Thorp-Gilman conference (L 12-2)

It was on the road to face Thorp-Gilman in the second match-up of the week, which saw Cadott again jump out to an early lead, 2-0 in the first inning.

“Our bats went pretty quiet after the third inning and that was a huge momentum swing in the game,” said Kempf.

The Cardinals scored a run in each of the next three innings, while holding Cadott scoreless. Thorp continued to add to their score, notching three runs in the fifth and sixth in the sixth inning. The game would go to the Cardinals, 12-2.

Wahl went just over four innings for the Hornets, allowing 10 hits, while serving up 5 strikeouts, and Matherne went an inning, giving up 4 hits.

Offensively, Swenson and Drier ended with 2 hits, while Tegels and Sonnentag each had 1. Wahl finished with 1 walk in the game.

“Ryan Swenson has been swinging a good bat lately, I’m looking for him to continue with some of that same success,” said Kempf.

May 21 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 14-0)

To finish out the week, the Hornets made the short trek to Fall Creek, but the offensive wasn’t there for Cadott. The Crickets knocked in 14 runs in the first several innings, while holding Cadott scoreless.

“We needed to hit the ball more to be successful and we just didn’t do enough at the plate,” said Kempf. “Three hits will not win us baseball games.”

West took the loss for Cadott, going two innings and giving up 9 hits, while Drier went for just over an inning.

There wasn’t much going for the Hornets offensively, as Wahl and Swenson came away with the only hits of the game, with 2 and 1, respectively.

Cadott’s record sits at 2-10 overall and 1-8 in the West Cloverbelt Conference.

“It was a tough game after a long week filled with games, players are sore and hurt,” said Kempf. “We are hoping that a week with only two games, can help us recover a bit.”
