Cadott is rapidly moving up the ranks in softball, after winning two out of three of their conference games over the week.

May 11 vs. Thorp-Gilman conference (W 13-7)

The Hornets began the week at home, against Thorp-Gilman, for the first of three conference match-ups. The Cardinals struck first, putting three runs on the board to Cadott’s zero. Thorp also added a run in the second, but the Hornets answered in the top of the second inning, bringing in two runs.

Cadott knocked in three more runs in the third, but the Cardinals also got on the board, with two runs. Thorp scored one more run in the fourth, but that would be their last time on the board, as the Hornets put up two runs in the fifth and six in the next inning, to take the game, 13-7.

Senior Calli Bremness pitched four innings, giving up 8 hits and 7 runs, walking 7 and striking out 1. Junior Makenna Barone then stepped in, finishing out the game with no hits, 2 walks and a strikeout.

On the offensive side, Barone, and sophomores Lauryn Goettl and Morgan Moldrem each had 2 hits. Junior Olivia Goodman, Bremness, senior Meadow Barone and freshman Kendall Webster all added 1 hit each.

May 13 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (W 6-4)

Next up, Osseo-Fairchild came to town, but Cadott came to play, putting up four runs on two hits in the first inning. Neither team scored in the second inning, but the Thunder added a run in the third and two in the fourth.

Osseo knocked in one more run in the fifth inning, but Cadott added two in the top of the inning, to make the final score 6-4 in favor of the Hornets.

Bremness pitched 3.67 innings, with 4 hits and 6 walks, while Makenna Barone went almost three and a half innings, with 3 hits and 5 strikeouts.

Goodman, Goettl and Moldrem each recorded 2 hits, and Makenna Barone and Meadow Barone chipped in with a hit each.

May 14 vs. McDonell conference (L 10-7)

In a back-to-back game, the Hornets faced off against McDonell, the third game in a row on Cadott’s home field. Neither team scored in the first and second innings, but the Macks put three runs on the board in the third. Not to be outdone, the Hornets racked up two runs on their side of the inning, including a solo home run from Goettl.

“Lauryn Goettl became a Dinger Nation member when she took Maggie Craker deep over the center-field fence,” said coach Kari Moldrem. “Makenna and Meadow really did a great job of leading the team, both offensively and defensively. Makenna has been keeping batters off balance. Meadow (at home plate) has baserunners staying close to the bases and not even thinking about stealing.”

The Barone sisters were both a driving force, offensively, as Cadott would add five more runs in the fourth inning. However, the Macks continued to score, bringing in four runs that inning and three in the fifth. The score sat at 10-7 and that’s how it would stay, as McDonell claimed the win.

Makenna Barone went all seven innings, giving up 12 hits, walking 8 and striking out 5.

On the offensive side, Meadow Barone ended with 3 hits, followed by Makenna Barone and Goettl, with 2 each. Webster, sophomore Laken Ryan and freshman Bella Barone, all chipped in with a hit each.

“We had four errors defensively that would have tipped the scale in our direction,” said K. Moldrem. “But, learn and improve as the season goes on.”

May 17 vs. Athens non-conference (W 9-3)

To finish out their hectic week, the Hornets traveled to Athens, where after a slow start in the first inning, Makenna Barone had her pitches “working well.” Bremness also came alive at the plate, going 3-3, with a double and two walks.

“She was on base all five times she went to the plate,” said K. Moldrem.

Athens got on the board first, scoring two runs in the first inning. They then went scoreless in the second, as did Cadott. The Hornets got on the board and from then on, it was as good as won.

Cadott added runs in each the remaining innings, while Athens rallied only long enough to put a run on the board in the sixth. The Hornets went home with the 9-3 victory, and a 6-4 record overall, with a 5-1 West Cloverbelt Conference standing.

“Once we took the lead, we never looked back,” said K. Moldrem.

Makenna Barone went all seven innings, only allowing 3 hits and 3 walks, and striking out 13. She also earned a hit on the offensive side, as did Goettl, Goodman, Meadow Barone, sophomore Elly Eiler, Ryan, B. Barone, M. Moldrem and Webster.
