Knights remain undefeated in conference action
In keeping with their winning ways in the East Lakeland Conference, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe softball program is undefeated in the league, after winning two out of three games over the week.
May 4 vs. Clear Lake conference (W 18-1)
The week began for the Knights in Clear Lake for a conference match-up, with the visitors coasting to victory. Clear Lake was only allowed to score one run the entire game, while the Knights racked up 18 runs to take the 18-1 victory.
Senior Izzy Clark pitched three innings for the Knights, giving up just one hit and the lone run. She also recorded 5 strikeouts.
On the offensive side, seniors Alyssa Helland and Kaitlyn Heinzen batted for 2 hits each, while Clark, sophomore Rachel Schilling and junior Jayda Turchen each recorded a hit.
May 8 vs. Tomahawk non-conference (W 6-5)
It was then off to Thorp, for a weekend tournament. The Knights faced Tomahawk first, in what would be a close contest.
“We had a great game offensively against Tomahawk,” said coach Andy Lorenzen.
Clark again went seven innings, giving up 5 hits and 5 runs, while notching 9 strikeouts, but the win came the way of the Knights, 6-5.
“Izzy pitched great, but we need to tighten things up on defense,” said Lorenzen.
Clark also led offensively, with 3 hits, followed by senior Michaiah Galster, with 2. Helland, Turchen and freshman Teryn Close rounded things out with 1 hit each. May 8 vs. Stevens Point Pacelli non-conference (L 12-3)
In the final game of the tournament, the Knights took on Stevens Point Pacelli, which proved a greater challenge.
“The Pacelli game started off great,” said Lorenzen. “We jumped up 3-0.”
However, Lorenzen says Clark simply ran out of gas, and the team started making mental and physical errors.
“Pacelli was a very good hitting team,” said Lorenzen.
The game ended up going to Pacelli, 12-3, with Clark completing six innings and allowing 12 hits. She also added 2 hits offensively.
Helland, Heinzen, Turchen, junior Teaira Spaeth and sophomore Michayla Turchen all came up with 1 hit each.
The Knights’ record now sits at 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
“Overall, the weekend was a success, and we need to continue to grow and learn from our mistakes,” said Lorenzen.
