Cadott takes two out of three in conference opener
Taking two out of three of their games this week, the Cadott Hornets Softball team is on a roll.
May 4 vs. Fall Creek conference (W 13-5)
The week began with a game against Fall Creek, where Cadott struck first, bringing in four runs in the opening inning, while holding the Crickets scoreless. The Hornets added another run in the second, but both teams went without scoring in the third inning.
Cadott then knocked in another six runs in the fourth inning, while Fall Creek answered back in the fifth, with four runs of their own. In the top of the inning, the Hornets came back to add two runs, to make it 13-5, and that’s the way the score would stand.
Junior Makenna Barone pitched seven innings for the Hornets, giving up 7 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 9.
On the offensive side, senior Calli Bremness led with 3 hits, followed by junior Olivia Goodman, and sophomores Lauryn Goettl, Elly Eiler and Laken Ryan, with 2 hits each.
May 6 vs. Altoona conference (L 6-3)
Next up for Cadott, was Altoona, in an away match-up. Altoona dealt the first blow, bringing in one run in the first inning, then another in the second, while Cadott remained scoreless in the first three innings. The Hornets got on the board with a run in the fourth, but the Rails knocked in two more.
Cadott rallied to add a run in the fifth, and seventh, but Altoona scored again in the sixth inning and went on to win the game, 6-3.
“If we clean up our defensive miscues and have more timely hitting, I believe we would have had the outcome we desired,” said coach Kari Moldrem.
There was good pitching in the game, as Barone again gave a solid performance, lasting six innings and giving up only 6 hits. She also struck out 3.
“Makenna pitched a great game and is really showing how much she has improved since her freshman year,” said Moldrem. “She is one of the dominant pitchers in the conference. Meadow has pretty much made sure that no one will steal a base on her. Just about every runner has been thrown out trying to steal.”
Bremness again led the way on offense, with 3 hits, while sophomore Eva Enestvedt added 2. Goodman, Barone, Ryan and sophomore Morgan Moldrem each contributed a hit.
May 7 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (W 7-4)
Playing in back-to-back games, Cadott then went up against Stanley-Boyd, traveling to the Orioles’ field. The game was scoreless throughout three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Hornets got on the board with a run, but Stanley-Boyd struck back in the fifth inning, with two runs.
Cadott then scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Orioles tried to rally, adding a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but it wouldn’t be enough and the Hornets walked away with a 7-4 victory.
Barone went seven innings, striking out 9 and giving up 8 hits.
On the offensive side, Goettl recorded 4 hits, followed by Bremness, Barone and Eiler, with 3. Batting for 2 hits each, were Goodman, senior Meadow Barone, Ryan and freshman Kendall Webster.
The wins over the week, move the Hornets’ record to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
