Hornets give it their all in competition at Team State

It’s been the goal for some years, to represent Cadott at Team State, and this season, the Hornets achieved that goal. The wrestlers traveled to Wausau West High School Feb. 20, for the competition.

“We were very proud to represent our community and school at Team State,” said coach Josh Spaeth. “This is our goal, each and every year.”

Ranked No. 4, Cadott faced off against the No. 1 Coleman in Division 3 action.

Freshman Lukas Simenson (106 pounds) picked up a win, as he went up against Lexus Baars, with a 4:13 fall. Sophomore and individual State champion Brayden Sonnentag (120) also got the win, with his fall over John Nowak in 1:25. State champion junior Gavin Tegels also claimed victory, by winning over Sawyer Seefeldt by fall, in 1:46.

Unfortunately, that was it on wins for Cadott and with only a few victories under their belts, Coleman advanced, 46-18, leaving the Hornets out of podium contention.

“We wrestled a very good Coleman team,” said Spaeth. “Each of our kids gave their best effort and they have nothing to hang their head about. Coleman was simply better than us on Saturday.”

Dropping their matches for the Hornets, were junior Logan Harel (113), as he fell to Raymond LeMieux in an 8-3 decision; freshman Ashton Bremness (126) in a loss to Brady Gross by fall, in 2:27; and sophomore Nick Fasbender (132), with a 6-4 loss coming from Chance Gruber.

Also falling, were junior Kaleb Sonnentag (138) to Will Bieber, with a 7-1 decision; sophomore Tristan Drier (145), with a loss to Karson Casper in a 5-1 decision; sophomore Cole Pfeiffer (152), who gave up his match to Owen Kinzinger, in a 13-8; and senior Nelson Wahl (160) wrestled for the last time in his high school career, for a 17-8 major decision loss against Peter Kuchta.

Moving into the higher weight classes, Cadott also saw matches slip away, including those for sophomore Peter Weir (170), who lost to Cole Klimek by fall, in 4:00; sophomore Dawson Webster (182), who fell to Tyler Blanchard, by 8-4 decision; freshman Axel Tegels (195), with a loss from Coby DenRuyter, in fall, by 3:29; and sophomore Kane Mengel (285), who dropped his match by 36-second fall, to Spencer Karban.

“Most of our team was back in the weight room on Monday,” said Spaeth. “This shows me that this team is very motivated to get back to Team State and improve on our performance.”

Spaeth says he is thankful to all the fans who traveled to Wausau, to support the team and all who supported the Hornets from home, as the team has some of the best fans in the state. Now that the season is over, it’s back to the drawing board, to get ready for the 2021-22 competition.

“We learned that we still have work to do, if we want to become Team State champions,” said Spaeth.
