Regional action Feb. 16, saw the Lake Holcombe boys team head to Bruce, as the No. 5 seed in their basketball bracket. Bruce came into the game ranked No. 4, but had a difficult time getting the upper hand over the Chieftains in the first half.

The score favored Lake Holcombe at halftime, 29-24, with the Chieftains hitting five shots from long range. Threepoint shooting dried up in the second half, however, and Bruce kicked up their offensive efforts.

Despite this, Lake Holcombe led until the last few seconds of the game. Down by two points, with six seconds remaining and the season hanging in the balance, the Chieftains had a chance to tie it up or take the lead.

Miscommunication was the team’s downfall and the ball ended up in Bruce’s hands as time ran out. The score stood at 48-46, in favor of the Raiders, ending Lake Holcombe’s hopes of advancing in the playoffs.

Playing his last game of high school basketball, senior Brock Flater finished the night with 10 points, claiming one of the three-pointers made by Lake Holcombe. Fellow senior Kaden Crank also saw his career end, finishing with 10 points and a shot from beyond the arc.

Junior Dylan Bowen’s 9 points all came from three-point land, while senior Tate Sauerwein and junior Colton Minnick each contributed 6 points. Senior Riley Gingras walked away from the season scoring 4 points on the night and sophomore Brendan Anders added 1 point.

The Chieftains also say goodbye to seniors Will Kliegle and Brandon Nitek.
