After they were once again without three of their four-year seniors, as a No. 2 seed in Regional action, the Cadott girls basketball program took on No. 3 Marathon. With a firstround bye, the second round of playoffs started off with a back-and-forth contest Feb. 12.

“We had to do a lot of adjusting this past week, and I thought the girls played a great game,” said coach Dave Hazuga. “They executed the game plan, played with great effort.”

It was fairly even scoring in the first half, with the Hornets only down by three at halftime. Both teams kept up the intensity in the second half and tightened their defense. By the time the clock ran out, Cadott had scored 15 points to Marathon’s 14.

However, with a slight advantage on the scoreboard from the first half, the Hornets watched Marathon walk away with a 38-36 victory, ending Cadott’s season.

Sophomore Laken Ryan kept up her three-point shooting, knocking down six from beyond the arc, finishing with 20 points. Sophomore Lauryn Goettl also got in on three-point action with a long range shot, finishing with 8 points.

Sophomore Elly Eiler also knocked down a tre, for her 3 points, as did senior Hailey Wellner for her 3. Sophomore Eva Enesvedt got on the board, with 2 points.

It was a bittersweet ending for Wellner, and seniors Jada Kowalczyk, Meadow Barone and Mac Prokupek, as the girls did not get to finish out their four years on the court together.

“…All of the girls got the most of the season,” said Hazuga. “It’s a tough season to say goodbye to.”
