Cadott finishes out season with a switched up roster

By Ginna Young

In the last two games of the regular season, the Cadott girls basketball squad saw the loss of three of their senior leaders, because of health concerns.

Feb. 5 vs. Regis conference (L 60-58)

Without Jada Kowalczyk, Mac Prokupek and Meadow Barone, the Hornets faced off against the ever-tough Regis.

“Roles had to change quickly and we had to make some adjustments,” said coach Dave Hazuga. “The girls did that and played with energy.”

The game was close in the first half, with Cadott only down by six. The score remained closed throughout the match-up, but Regis barely managed to pull out the win, earning the conference victory by a mere two points.

“We rallied together as a team,” said Hazuga.

Sophomores Lauryn Goettl and Laken Ryan led for the Hornets, with 21 points each. All of Ryan’s points came from three-point shots – which is believed to be a new record for the program – while Goettl knocked down one shot from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Elly Eiler also hit a three, ending with 8 points, as did junior Olivia Goodman, who finished with 4 points. Senior Hailey Wellner also added 4 points to the mix.

“Watching [the] girls step up in a big way, was a great thing to see,” said Hazuga.

Feb. 6 vs. Fall Creek conference (L 71-32)

The next day, Cadott traveled to Fall Creek, again without the three seniors. The Hornets struggled to find their offense in the match-up, going into halftime down by 19.

“We didn’t rebound as well as we usually do and we are still trying to make adjustments to our new lineups,” said Hazuga.

The second half repeated the first, in terms of scoring, and with Cadott only mustering 15 points to Fall Creek’s 35, the game went to the Crickets, 71-32.

Eiler and Goettl led the team with 11 points each, with a three coming from both, while Ryan again came through with a three-pointer. Wellner, sophomore Eva Enestvedt and freshman Emma Kowalczyk each chipped in with 2 points.

Sophomore Lucy Lindeman completed the scoring, with 1 point.

“We had some good stretches and put a few runs together,” said Hazuga, “but this game will help us prepare for our upcoming playoff game.”
