Going into the game against Birchwood Jan. 29, Brock Flater only needed 15 points to reach the 1,000 mark in his high school basketball career at Lake Holcombe. Waiting with breathless anticipation, crowds in-person and at home, watched each possession to see if that would be the one that garnered the milestone for the senior.

“Yeah, I knew last year, I had a chance and Coach (Joy) Webster definitely helped me make that happen,” said Flater.

Flater normally scores upward of 20 points, so fans sat on the edge of their seats, expecting the 1,000th point to come before halftime, but nerves may have kicked in for Flater, leaving him three shy of his mark as the halfway buzzer sounded.

“For sure, tons of pressure seeing everyone there with signs,” he said, “but my teammates got me through that and really helped me out.”

As the second half started, friends and family kept up the countdown. Finally, with 14:42 left to go in the game, on a lay-up on his “home” end, Flater scored 1,000. A halt to the match-up was called and Flater received the game ball, as well as hugs from teammates and family members.

Flater says when he first started playing varsity ball, he never dreamed he would rack up so many points.

“But, I set it as my goal and went to camps, and worked and worked on it, and it kept getting closer,” said Flater.

The season hasn’t been without its challenges – in more ways than one for Flater – but with the fan section all on their feet cheering as the 1,000th point came, it made a memory for Flater to cherish throughout his lifetime.

“It was awesome, best sports experience I’ve ever had, seeing all those people there to support me.”
