Lake Holcombe wins sit them near top in league

The Lake Holcombe boys basketball program came away with two big wins over the week, before dropping a close game against Elmwood.

Feb. 4 vs. Winter conference (W 91-47)

The Chieftains traveled to Winter, to begin the week. On the road, Lake Holcombe outscored their opponent, 47-26 going into halftime. The visitors kept up the scoring onslaught, recording 44 points in the second half, while holding Winter to just 21.

Lake Holcombe ended the night by walking away with a 91-47 conference victory.

“Josh Jones played a great game tonight and had his first double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds,” said coach Joy Webster.

Fellow senior Kaden Kinney also had another doubledouble, with 10 rebounds and 21 points. Junior Kaden Crank led all scorers with 22 points, including a season high four, three-pointers.

Sophomore Colton Minnick had a nice game off the bench, with 4 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 points, including a three-point shot. Junior Brock Flater also had 14 points and 4 assists, with six of those points coming from long range.

Senior Jarred Jiskra added 6 points to the mix, while senior Tyler Dixon chipped in with 7. Junior Will Kliegle got on the board with 2 points and freshman Brendan Anders knocked down a free throw for 1.

“This was back-to-back games of putting 90 points on the board,” said Webster. “I told the boys, this is how we need to shoot in the big games and we can make a run at the end of the season.”

Feb. 6 vs. Flambeau conference (W 76-53)

Two days later, Lake Holcombe hosted Flambeau, walking away with yet another conference victory. The Chieftains were up seven at halftime, then poured on the offense in the second half, coming away with a 76-53 win.

Flater led the Chieftains, with 17 points, including two shots from beyond the arc. Kinney also knocked down a three, ending the night with 14 points. Crank let loose with a triple, for 11 points and Minnick got in on the three action, finishing with 9 points.

Jones had 11 on the night, Dixon added 8 and Kliegle had 4 points. Jiskra rounded things out with 2 points.

Feb. 10 vs. Elmwood non-conference (L 71-69)

The winning streak ended after the weekend off, as Lake Holcombe visited Elmwood. The Chieftains fell behind in the first half, down 41-34 at halftime.

Lake Holcombe outscored their opponents in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the slight lead and the Chieftains saw the game go to the home team, 71-69.

Flater led the Chieftains in scoring, with 24 points, followed by Jiskra, with 16. Jones and Crank each had 12, and Kinney added 5 points.

Lake Holcombe’s record stands at 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the East Lakeland Conference, putting them at second in the league.
