Cadott improves record with win over Boyceville

The boys saw a tough week for the Cadott basketball program, as they couldn’t come up with a win against two conference opponents. However, Cadott got the win in an out-of-conference match-up at the end of the week.

Feb. 4 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (L 85-61)

Cadott hosted Osseo-Fairchild at home, with the Hornets looking to use home court advantage to get the win. Unfortunately, Cadott fell behind in the first half and couldn’t bounce back.

The Hornets went into halftime down 38-20. While they scored 41 points and held Osseo-Fairchild to just 20 points in the second half, time ran out before Cadott could overtake the visiting team. Cadott saw Osseo-Fairchild head home with an 85-61 conference victory.

Senior Mason Poehls led the Hornets, with 19 points, six of which came from three-point land. Senior Mitch Drilling came next, with 10 points, while freshman Tegan Ritter knocked down a three and added 7 points.

Also adding three-pointers to the mix for 6 points, was senior Ben Steffes. Junior Cole Sopiarz knocked down a three, finishing with 6 points. Junior Brad Irwin also added 6 points. Freshman Eddie Mittermeyer chipped in with 5 and sophomore Ethan West rounded things out with 2 points.

Feb. 7 vs. Thorp conference (L 58-43)

After a few days rest, Thorp came to call. The Hornets again found themselves down at halftime. With just a fivepoint deficit going in the second half, Cadott looked to capitalize, but Thorp poured on the offense and took the conference game, 58-43.

Poehls again led with 25 points, notching three shots from long range. Irwin followed that with 5 points, including a three, and Mittermeyer also knocked down a three-pointer.

Steffes added a three and Sopiarz ended the night with 3 points. Drilling and junior Andy Falkenberg each chipped in with 2 points.

Feb. 10 vs. Boyceville non-conference (W 64-55)

Cadott finished the week stepping out of the conference, taking on Boyceville in an away game. The Hornets were only down by three in the first half, then came roaring out of halftime to outscore Boyceville, 42-30. Cadott brought home the victory, 64-55.

“[We] created some crucial turnovers for Boyceville, where they had to put us on the line to stop the clock,” said coach Dusty Burish, “and we knocked down our free throws to pull away.”
