December 26, 2012 --John Dunbar of Spencer was to be a part of the 16-member United States F Class Open Rifle team after recently qualifying in several trial competitions held in the past year. He was to represent the nation at the 2013 World Championships in Raton, New Mexico next August. -- The Clark County Board of Supervisors had commended Lois Hagedorn for 29 years of service to the county. She had served for 14 of those years as the register of deeds. -- The St. Anthony School students held their annual Christmas Program last week. The children sang songs that matched the theme of “Christmas in the Country.”

December 31, 1997 -- Michael Wrycza, a farmer from Poland, was participating in a year-long experience with the FFA’s World Experience in Agriculture to learn more about American agriculture. He was staying at the home of Danny and Diane Meyer in Loyal. -- Only two students out of a possible 863 students dropped out of area high schools in the 1996-97 school year. According to a report released by the State Department of Public Instruction, only one student each had dropped out of school in the Granton and Spencer school districts while no students had dropped out of school from the Greenwood and Loyal school districts. -- With the spring candidate filing period soon reaching its deadline, candidates were still needed for the offices of Greenwood mayor, Greenwood city council member and Loyal city council member. The deadline for filing was Jan. 6.

December 28, 1977 -- Workers were still in the process of removing railcars from the Soo Line derailment that had occurred several weeks ago in Unity. More than 50 cars had been derailed in the accident and workers had to slice them into smaller pieces so they could be shipped out to be properly disposed of. -- Railroad crossing gates were installed at the railroad crossing on Clark Street in the village of Spencer. The crossing gates replaced a set of flashing red lights that had been previously used at the railroad crossing. -- A new feed leg was being installed at the Neillsville-Granton Farmers Union plant in Granton. The work required a 120-ft tall crane to be brought in from Wausau to help install the necessary equipment. The work was expected to be finished within the next few weeks. -- Sirloin steak was $1.38 per pound.

December 27, 1962 -- A series of accidents had occurred in the past week in the Loyal-Greenwood area because of snowstorms, fog and slippery road conditions, with no injuries reported from any of the accidents. On Dec. 17, a car struck a bus full of schoolchildren from the Greenwood School District causing considerable damage to the car and only minimal damage to the school bus. On Dec. 21, a car and truck collided with minimal damage in Loyal on Dec. 22, two cars received considerable damage after swiping each other during blizzard conditions; and on Dec. 26 a minor accident between two cars occurred on Loyal’s Main Street. “Remember When” items are taken from past issues of the Tribune Record Gleaner from 1968-present, from the Greenwood Gleaner from 1957 to 1964 and from the Loyal Tribune prior to 1968.
